Salma – poetry and the liberation of women

When she was 13 years old, like many of the young girls in the village where she grew up, Salma was taken out of school and banished to a life within the four walls of her home. After she married, this life of confinement continued in the home of her in-laws. But Salma wrote in secret, had her poems smuggled out and is today India’s most important Tamil-language poet, a distinguished feminist and well-known politician. The documentary film Salma is about the long and difficult struggle for freedom and for the right to self-expression.

The film is in Tamil, with English subtitles
