Susan Abulhawa

abulhawa-susan_140Susan Abulhawa was born of Palestinian refugees from the Six Day War of 1967. She lived in several places in the Middle East before she arrived in the US from Jerusalem in her early teens.

Abulhawa's debut novel Mornings in Jenin is a big epic story about the Palestinian family Abulheja through four generations. The story spans over forty agonizing years in the history of Palestine: from the family's idyllic home in the ancient village Ein Hod in the early forties to the main character Amal's journey back to her destroyed country after 2000.
Mornings in Jenin is a novel about breaking away involuntarily. It is about loss, separation and exile, and it is a painful but important portrayal of fates in one of the most difficult conflicts of our time.

Abulhawa has written a series of essays and articles for international media. She founded the organization Playgrounds for Palestine who works for Palestinian children's right to play and a childhood in occupied territory. Mornings in Jenin is a great success in the US and is sold to many countries.
